CHOUINARD: A Living Legacy

July 7, 2001 through August 26, 2001

Fifty years of Los Angeles Art is celebrated with the work of artists, faculty and students associated with The Chouinard Art Institute, an icon of contemporary art during its vital presence from 1921-1972. Presented at three North County San Diego locations, 137 artists will be featured simultaneously at Oceanside Museum of Art, the Kruglak Gallery at MiraCosta College and the Boehm Gallery at Palomar College. Each venue will highlight artists from different periods of Chouinard’s history with a Chouinard graduate curating the exhibition for that venue.

At the Boehm Gallery, Robert Perine is the curator for The Early Years, 1921-1945. James Aitchison is curating The Middle Years, 1946-1955 at the Kruglak Gallery and Ed Flynn is the curator for The Last Years at Oceanside Museum of Art, 1956-1972.

This exhibition displays a cross-section of style, purpose, and belief, ranging from the early European influences of the 1920s to the changes stimulated by World War II, to the rebellions of the 1960s when Los Angeles art students were determined to develop their own local culture. The legacy of Nelbert Chouinard, founder of the Chouinard Art Institute, is rekindled with this vanguard exhibition, a reminder of the impact left by the Chouinard Art Institute on twentieth century American art.

The Chouinard Art Institute was also noted for its legendary Masked Ball, the inspiration for this year’s La Nuit des Beaux Art VIII black-tie dinner-dance. This annual fund-raiser begins at the museum with a champagne reception in the midst of the exhibition, Chouinard: A Living Legacy, and continues at the Civic Center Plaza. Details are on the back page.

ARTIST ALLIANCE UPDATE

The Artist Alliance is a special group of OMA members who are artists. Our mission is to initiate and foster a strong bond between the museum, the artist, and the community. During the recent “Days of Art” Artists Alliance members participated by exhibitiong their work at the OMA-School of Art. There was an artist reception hosted by the School of Art staff. Strong attendance and community support deemed the show a success.

Another opportunity for the Artist Alliance members to exhibit in the community was through the Arts Alive Banner project sponsored by OMA and Main Street Oceanside. This public art display was on view throughout the downtown Oceanside area from February through May. Artists were invited to participate if they were members of Artist Alliance. The banners were auctioned to winning bidders at a closing reception with spirited bidding contributing to proceeds for artists and OMA alike.

Currently, the Artist Alliance members are creating original masks that will be used as centerpieces for the upcoming black tie fund-raiser, La Nuit des Beaux VIII. The masks will be silent auction items at the Gala.

To keep in step with future opportunites to exhibit as a member of Artist Alliance, plan to attend the next meeting where details and deadlines will be discussed. These opportunities are for members only, however, anyone interested in becoming a member of Artist Alliance is welcome to attend one of the monthly meetings.

Next meeting will be held at the museum on Friday, July 6th at 1:00 pm.
The Second Annual Artist Alliance Potluck will be Sunday, August 12th from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm at St. Mary’s, Star of the Sea Room, 609 Pier View Way, Oceanside. A slide presentation of artist members’ work will be featured. Come join us with a dish to share (salad or dessert) and meet other artists.

For questions about Artist Alliance membership, meetings or the potluck, please call Jan King, Artist Alliance Coordinator at 760.966.0747.

SULU o le tautua comes to a close with festive celebration

The City of Oceanside, the Oceanside Public Library and the Oceanside Museum of Art collaborated on a year- long celebration of the cultural traditions and art of American Samoa. A closing reception at The Sunshine Brooks Theater, June 23rd featured the singing and dancing of local Samoan and Pacific Islanders. Attended by a standing-room-only crowd, the reception recognized the accomplishments of the SULU project which was made possible by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

This year, the City of Oceanside received the prestigious Helen Putnam Award for Excellence in the Arts and Quality of Life category for Sulu o le Tautua (the Torch of Service). An honor from the California League of Cities, the award acknowledges outstanding efforts and innovative solutions by government to improve the quality of life in local communites, implement efficiencies in service delivery and operations and provide service responsive to the local community.
