MEDAL OF DISTINCTION HONOREES

You can view a more inclusive version of this newsletter as a pdf and download for printing here.

Ann & Bruce Mortland

Valya Roenko Simpson & Irv Simpson

Oceanside Museum of Art presents the Medal of Distinction each year at the Museum Ball in honor of members of the museum and the community who have made a significant contribution to the success of the museum. This year’s honorees are Irv and Valya Simpson and Ann Mortland.

OMA has been like a home for Irv and Valya over the years. Being both artists and art aficionados, Irv and Valya naturally came to be supporters of OMA. They have continued to give generously of their time and resources and have procured sizable gifts for both the Capital and Endowment funds. Irv is a small businessman and artist and has served on the board for eight years, holding positions as Secretary and Treasurer. He is also a longstanding member of the Exhibitions committee, curator of two OMA Regional juried exhibits, and member of the Collections and Finance committees. As a fiber artist, Valya was exhibited at OMA in a well-received one-person show, Cell Memory: Baba. She consistently enhances museum events with her vibrant personality and beautiful, handmade, one-of-a-kind clothing. Together they are founding members of the Millennium Club.

Ann has been interested in the Museum from its beginning, and became active after her retirement in 1997. When the new Getty Center opened in 1998, Ann arranged seven bus trips that were among the first available through local organizations. Ann has been a dedicated member of the Special Events committee for several years, serving as secretary from 2001 to this year, and chaired or co-chaired the Museum Ball four times. She also has organized numerous Mardi Gras Brunches and other events, and continues to handle reservations and table arrangements. Now completing her fourth three-year term on the Board of Trustees, she is serving as Board Secretary. In 1998, she coordinated the Grand Opening celebrations for the new building. Ann and her husband Bruce are Millenium Club members and Platinum Founders.

DONOR PROFILE

OMA is delighted to inaugurate a new feature in our quarterly newsletter profiling some of the supporters that make many of the museum’s exhibitions and programs possible. We are especially pleased to begin with the Leichtag Family Foundation, which has generously supported several OMA programs in the past year, including the exhibition Fabric of Survival: The Art of Esther Nisentha Krinitzl and its related programs, as well as the hugely popular presentation of the film Shanghai Ghetto this past May.

The Leichtag Family Foundation, established in 1991, has awarded grants totaling more than $40 million to improve lives and benefit the community. Founded by Max “Lee” Leichtag , a successful entrepreneur, his wife Andre “Toni” Leichtag, and their daughter Joli Ann Leichtag, the Leichtag Family Foundation exercises visionary philanthropy through its mission that “strives to alleviate human hardship, advance self-sufficiency, and promote tolerance and understanding, reflecting the Leichtag’s pride in their Jewish heritage.” The Leichtag Family Foundation has a particular interest in advancing the growth and enrichment of North County San Diego since this was the community in which the family lived and worked for many years.

Since the passing of Mr. and Mrs. Leichtag and Joli, the Leichtag Family Foundation continues to carry out its mission under the leadership of its Board, each of whom had personal connections to the family. Of the Foundation’s relationship with OMA, Leichtag Family Foundation President and CEO said, “Through its many and varied efforts, the Oceanside Museum of Art is having an extremely positive impact on the lives of many San Diego County community members. The Leichtag Family Foundation is particularly pleased to partner with OMA in building opportunities for Jewish culture and life in San Diego’s North County.”
OMA deeply appreciates the support of the Leichtag Family Foundation, and we know that our members join us in saying “Thank you!”

ARTIST ALLIANCE

Are you an artist? Join OMA as an Artist Alliance Member and be part of a program designed to foster a bond between the museum, artists, and the community. The Alliance showcases members’ work in local venues. September 15 at 1:30 p.m. there will be a Meet the Artists reception at the El Corazon Senior Center. You can also join members at Art on the Coast Art Walk the last Thursday of each month from 5:30 to 8:30. Oceanside Art Gallery will feature new work by Artist Alliance members. For more information contact coordinator Bev Stuber, at 760.732.0399 or bastuber@dslextreme.com.

CREATE A LEGACY AND BENEFIT OMA
Contribute to Oceanside Museum of Art’s future by planning for a special kind of gift. Although cash contributions are always appreciated, there is
another way to help ensure OMA’s future -- by including the Museum in your will. Donors who remember OMA in their wills can provide indispensable
support for exhibitions, education programs, capital needs or other purposes. You decide how the Museum will use your gift. You can even set up a named fund for a purpose that you designate. You may arrange for the Museum to receive a specific dollar amount, assets such as real estate or art, or a percentage of your estate. Your legacy gift is tax deductible and is easy to establish even if you already have a will. For more information, contact OMA’s Director of Community Relations, Natasha Martinez at (760) 435-3726

We Thank These Museum Sponsors and Business Partner Members
