EDUCATION AND FAMILY PROGRAMS

Summer 2013

Summer@ArtQuest: Kids Summer Art Camp

oma-summer-art-questThe mission of Summer@ArtQuest is to foster and promote the study and appreciation of modern and contemporary art, in particular, art and artists from California. Children will view OMA’s current and past exhibits to learn about various art mediums and will then participate in a variety of hands-on art projects. The mediums used will include painting, drawing, sculpture and graphic design. In addition, we will emphasize the elements and principles of art and the workings of a museum. Children will be involved in both individual and group projects. And we will have fun with art!

ArtQuest@OMA

ArtQuest@OMA has three main goals for participants: exposure to the museum, meaningful connections to the exhibitions, success in a creative activity and alignment with other curriculum areas. During the tours, Volunteer Educators integrate standards from various grade-specific subject areas, such as Life Science and the Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) and demonstrate art methods, techniques and tools in the gallery through the use of a specially-stocked ArtKart, and lead a hands-on art activity that encourages children to express their own creativity and imagination.

For more information about ArtQuest@OMA or if you are interested in volunteering for the program, please contact Julia Fister, Director of Education/Programs, at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .

Free Family Art Days

Supporting our mission to foster and promote the study, appreciation, and understanding of art, Free Family Art Day is a time where families can come together by enjoying hands-on arts and craft activities designed by OMA staff. Each Free Family Art Day has its own creative twist; past Art Day participants have made quilts, paper flowers and even sculpted potatoes into curious creatures. All materials and instructions are supplied; in addition, docents are available to lead kid-friendly tours of the exhibits throughout the day. Projects are inspired by OMA exhibitions.

At Free Family Art Day, children and their parents work closely in the artistic process designing small works of art that reflect concepts and themes from the exhibitions on view. All art activities and exhibitions on view are free to the public.

Projects are designed to engage children of all ages. No art experience is required for the art activities. Healthy refreshments and kid-centric docent tours will be provided. Children must be accompanied by caregiver.
