The Oceanside Museum of Art is a gathering place where friends meet to share
and enjoy the rich cultural experiences available in North San Diego County.

The Museum Star Ball

Saturday, July 26th (The museum will be closed to the public on this day)

Summertime in Oceanside would not be complete without the gala, black tie dinner dance, The Museum Star Ball, held this year on the museum’s new Biogen Idec Terrace. This annual fundraiser supports the programs of Oceanside Museum of Art with a sparkling evening of gourmet cuisine and lively dancing. The evening begins with a cocktail reception on the terrace at 6:00 p.m.. Guests will be treated to favorite Ball highlights like the popular Startini Bar, hosted cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, and musical entertainment.

Great gifts and dining packages are available to the highest bidder at the silent auction including exquisite, one-of-a-kind, fine-art by renowned artists.

The Museum Star Ball is also the occasion to honor members of the museum and the community who have made a significant contribution to the success of the museum. Each year the “Medal of Distinction” is presented at the Ball. This year the museum honors
Paul Dooley, Larry Hatter, and Harry and Mercedes Singh.

Reservations are $250 per person, a wonderful way to support the cultural arts in the community with a fabulous, memorable evening. Call the museum for more information or reservations, 760-435-3720.

Documentary photographer Chris Rainier

July 31st at 7:00 p.m

Documentary photographer Chris Rainier
will talk about the work in the exhibition Ancient Marks: The Sacred Origins of Tattoos and Body Marking, on July 31st at 7:00 p.m. at the museum. Admission is $5. OMA members attend free as a benefit of membership.

Rainier is considered one of the world’s leading documentary photographers. He has traveled the world depicting the rituals and traditions of cultures for publications such as Time, Life, and National Geographic. During a seven year period of travel and exploration his lens captured the origins of tattooing and body-altering art that are portrayed in the exhibition Ancient Marks: The Sacred Origins of Tattoos and Body Marking, on view through August 24th.

Rainier’s elegant black and white photographs reflect humanity’s efforts to forge identity, beauty, storytelling, and sacred beliefs. His images span from the savannahs of Africa to the barrios of Los Angeles connecting the indigenous forms of tattooing, scarification, piercing, and other forms of body-altering art.Rainer has released three books, including
Ancient Marks, which corresponds with the exhibition and is available at the
OMA Museum Store.

OMA Culinary Cinema Series
Film: “Eat, Drink, Man, Woman”

Oscar-winning director Ang Lee portrays the joys and sorrows of a widowed Chinese master chef and his family living in modern day Taipei, Taiwan in “Eat, Drink, Man, Woman”. At the start of the film the chef lives with his three attractive daughters, all of whom are unattached. As the film progresses, each daughter meets new men. Stereotypes are broken and the living situation within the family changes. Throughout the film, each character finds his or her own way, often surprising the audience. Mouth-watering scenes of gourmet Chinese cooking are the threads that weave the characters lives together culminating with their Sunday dinners.

Join us at the museum for this delightful film and a gourmet Chinese dinner prepared by Chin’s Restaurant executive chef. Dinner includes egg rolls, sesame chicken, mongolian beef, honey shrimp, fried rice, buddha’s delight vegetables, dessert & tea.

Cinema Society of San Diego president, Andrew Friedenberg will introduce the film with background on the actors and director.
Reservations required in advance, limited to 100 guests. Cost is $60 for OMA members, $75 for non-members.
